Making a GIF that works well in Discord

Discord autoplays GIFs at whatever size you upload, so there’s no benefit to going bigger than the chat window will display. A width of 320–480px and 10–15 FPS looks sharp in a Discord message while keeping the file well under the free-tier upload limit. If you’re converting a longer clip, trimming it down first matters more for file size than any other single setting.

Frequently asked questions

What’s Discord’s file size limit for GIFs?
As of August 2026, Discord’s free-tier upload limit is 20MB per file (Nitro Basic raises it to 50MB, and Nitro to 500MB). Discord changes this limit periodically, so it’s worth checking Discord’s own support page if you’re not sure what applies to your account.
How do I make sure my GIF fits under the limit?
Keep the width around 320–480px and the frame rate around 10–15 FPS for a typical short clip — that combination comfortably fits most GIFs under 20MB. If a GIF still comes out too large, the “small” quality setting or a shorter clip will shrink it further.
Will my GIF autoplay in Discord?
Yes — Discord autoplays GIF attachments and embeds by default, which is exactly the behavior a GIF is designed for.
Can I use this for a Discord emoji or sticker instead?
Not this tool — emoji have much tighter requirements, at 128×128 pixels and 256KB. Use the Discord Emoji GIF Maker for those, which sets the canvas and compresses to the emoji limit in one pass. Stickers use different formats again and are not GIF-based.
